In 2021, Prof Giles Jackson, Director of the Institute for Business, Sustainability & Society at Shenandoah University, travelled to Ecuador to meet with Selva Vida Sin Fronteras, a charity that has provided food and medical relief to over 5000 indigenous people for over 30 years. The challenge: to help the Cofan people find a more sustainable way to earn a living.
Cofanis have long struggled to make ends meet in the coffee business. It's not hard to understand why: middlemen pay them a measly $22 for 100 pounds of coffee beans. Moreover, growing coffee plants requires cutting down primary rainforest and heavy use of pesticides. It's a lose-lose proposition!
Working together, we have found a solution that generates much-needed cash flow for Cofanis, while protecting the Amazon rainforest and affirming cultural traditions. The solution is to earn a living by selling 100% sustainably-made handicrafts.
Our role is to sell these beautiful handicrafts to eco-conscious consumers in the US, and give 100% of the proceeds back to the community. Our product line consists of high quality bags, bracelets, necklaces, and key rings, all 100% sustainably made from natural materials gathered from the forest floor.
And to help reverse the damage caused by coffee cultivation, for every product that is sold, Cofanis plant a hardwood tree in the rainforest.
